Athlete by Rivoire
Small porcelain biscuit figurine. Created by Raymond Léon Rivoire around 1925 for the Manufacture de Sèvres. Engraved marks on the underside.
Sculpture entirely handmade by our craftsmen in the workshops of the Manufacture. Nuances and variations may appear from one piece to another, making each one almost unique.
Borrowing their contours from classical Greek figures, the Bathers by Raymond Léon Rivoire (1884-1966), with their stylised, modern forms, are part of the Parisian sculptor's Art Deco output. The two sculptures, also available in silver and bronze, were originally used as bookends.
A student of Jean-Antoine Injalbert at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Rivoire began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1905. He enjoyed success and was awarded major commissions in the 1930s, including the creation of a bronze Diane with a greyhound for the grand salon of the ocean liner Atlantique and a bronze Neptune drawn by a sea horse for the ocean liner Normandie.
