Borrowing their contours from classical Greek figures, the Bathers by Raymond Léon Rivoire (1884-1966), with their stylised, modern forms, are part of the Parisian sculptor's Art Deco output. The two sculptures, also available in silver and bronze, were originally used as bookends.

A student of Jean-Antoine Injalbert at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Rivoire began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1905. He enjoyed success and was awarded major commissions in the 1930s, including the creation of a bronze Diane with a greyhound for the grand salon of the ocean liner Atlantique and a bronze Neptune drawn by a sea horse for the ocean liner Normandie.
