Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux
Porcelain biscuit figure representing the Prince Imperial, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, created by Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux around 1872. Sèvres marks on the base.
The sculpture is entirely handmade by our craftsmen in the workshops of the Manufacture. Shades and variations may appear from one piece to another, making each one almost unique.
Only son of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte was born in 1856 and grew up amid the splendour of the Second Empire before experiencing exile after his father’s fall in 1870.
As heir to the throne under the claimed name “Napoleon IV,” he soon came to embody the hopes of the Bonapartist movement. Driven by a desire for action and military distinction, he joined British forces in South Africa in 1879 as a volunteer observer. He was killed there at the age of 23 during an ambush.
